Obama backs $50 billion state aid package to prevent layoffs

In a letter released Saturday night, President Obama urged congressional leaders to pass $50 billion in assistance to states. That money would help economically troubled states settle their Medicaid deficits — and thereby free up funds that could prevent the firing of as many as 300,000 teachers.
